Creative Writing at Hebden Bridge Library

Saturday, 2 January 2010

Beginning Thursday Jan 7, award-winning novelist Stephen May will be leading two six week creative writing workshops Mondays and Thursdays at Hebden Bridge Library 6pm-7.30pm.

The sessions will cover plotting, structure, imagery, dialogue, characterisation, setting and pace... and are suitable for shy (but keen) beginners as well as more experienced writers.

The classes will lead to the opportunity to write and perform (or have performed by others...) a five minute monologue in public...

Each session costs five pounds, except the first which is free (subsequent sessions will be payable in advance in six week blocks ie thirty quid for seven sessions in total...)

The classes will be lively, friendly, informal, fun, practical and stimulating... Stephen is an experienced, gentle (and gently demanding) teacher, who literally wrote the book on Creative Writing (his Teach Yourself Creative Writing is published by Hodder and Staughton). His approach to teaching creativity has been shaped by years spent organising writing courses at the Ted Hughes Arvon Centre at Lumb Bank, where he witnessed the best possible practice...

His own novel, Tag, was nominated for Welsh Book of the Year 2009 and went on to win the Media Wales Prize for the book on the list most enjoyed by readers...
