• A main stage for music performances
  Musicians / bands from the West Yorkshire communities performing the roots music of their heritage and/or a fusion of sounds from different communities… Whether they or their grandparents are from Morley or Mali, Keighley or Karachi
• A World Food café
• An Acoustic Music Marquee
• Stalls / world market place - Stalls offering various types of food and goods from different cultures and supporting causes of peace and unity

The World on Your Doorstep Festival - 21/22 July
Thanks to £10,000 lottery grant

There will be a new outdoor event in Hebden Bridge this year. Thanks to a £10,000 lottery grant from Awards for All The World on Your Doorstep Festival will go ahead in July. Musicians, dancers, artists, street performers, among others, are urged to get involved.

After the loss to Hebden Bridge of The Carnival and Firework celebrations festival organisers have invited those involved to throw their weight behind this showcase event.

“It is a terrible shame that we’re losing traditional events from Calder Holmes Park,” festival organiser Dave Boardman told the Hebden Bridge Web, “especially community based events like the carnival. I’d urge any of the community groups who used the Carnival and Bonfire night events to raise money for the community to get involved with us.

“There is space for stalls to raise funds, perhaps schools could organise a procession around the park during the festival – and we’d certainly appreciate the help and experience of programme sellers, litter collectors and other volunteers. This can help community groups keep a high profile in Hebden Bridge. Its also an opportunity for local musicians, dancers and artists to showcase their work”

The World on Your Doorstep Festival on 21/22 July is the brainchild of the late lamented Rob Armstrong, a stalwart of Riverside, Open Mic Surgery and the Trades Club among others. It will recognize the unique range of music, arts and dance talent in the Calder valley and surrounding areas and promises a wide range of entertainment.

It is an opportunity for the Calder Valley to showcase its own talents and invite in musicians from neighbouring areas to come and perform. “The Open Mic Surgery will be organising a chilled acoustic area and for the main stage We have interest from Breton musicians based in Keighley, Arab, Caribbean, East European and Asian performers as well as young rock bands and a nice mix of jazz, ska an funk.

“There’s too many people out there trying to divide communities, we aim to bring them together, "added Dave. "So in keeping with that attitude it would be great to see those who’ve brought us the Carnival and Firework events getting involved.”

As those people know there’s a lot to be done in putting a festival on and although The World on Your Doorstep is a definite thanks to the lottery the organisers are still hoping for other funding bids to be successful. Stricter regulations mean more costs in terms of health and safety and childcare, so people with the right qualifications and experience are necessary. Anyone wanting to help out children’s activities, marshalling, litter picking and anyone wanting to book a stall or perform should contact Katie Hansen and Dave Boardman via the Trades Club or on katie@theworldonyourdoorstep.org
