Dog owners now have no excuse

Hebden Royd Town Council and the Calderdale Safer Communities Partnership have joined forces to reduce dog fouling in Hebden Royd. On a trial basis free dog poo bags will be available along the Rochdale Canal Tow Path in the centre of Hebden Bridge to encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs.
"We've had the Alternative Technology Center at Hebble End handing out free bags since before Christmas and they have started to notice a real difference," Jason Boom, Hebden Royd Town Council Environmental Community Warden told the Hebden Bridge Web. "The bags are fully compostable and plastic free so we are also supporting the plastic bag free campaign in Hebden Bridge" |

"The canal tow path runs right through the center of Hebden Bridge and is a popular walkway for residents and visitors alike. We want to make it as clean and safe as we can for all to enjoy." He added, "In a recent survey undertaken by West Yorkshire Police, dog fouling ranked in the top three of complaints that residents would like to see acted upon in the Upper Calder Valley. It's down to all dog owners to act responsibly and clean up after their dog."
In addition to this initiative 3 new litter bins will be installed on the tow path which are dual purpose and can accept dog waste as well as general litter. To kick start these new facilities and encourage use, 250 free boxes of compostable dog poo bags are being made available free to dog owners. They can be collected from either the Tourist Information Centre or the Council Offices on St Georges Street. After these have been taken you'll be able to by new ones from the ATC and Menagerie Pet Shop, West End. |

In 2000, the ATC contacted popular poet and comedian, John Hegley, to ask if he would donate a dog poem. Several weeks later, they received a postcard with the following six line poem on the back:
