John Foster, the essayist

Posted by Jonathan Timbers, Sunday, April 14, 2002

You may be aware that on the way up to Heights Road, passed Dodd Naze and Burlees Lane, there is an old and derelict stone cottage with a stone plaque above the lintel which commemorates a local man of the 19th (or perhaps 18th?) century. I believe that he was an essayist, and well-known in his own time.

Does anyone have information about him and his achievements? I think that a John Foster Society or Charity exists but I don't think that it does much which can be clearly connected with the reasons why the man himself was highly regarded. Any info. then?
