War with Iraq

As a Liberal Democrat, I wanted to post my total opposition to the Blair/Bush rush to war with Iraq. I also wanted to make clear the party's stance so that people in Hebden Bridge are very clear about it.

  1. Lib Dems would not support any war of intervention at all unless it is with the specific authority of the UN and run by them.
  2. In the case of Iraq no case has been made for war in any event. The inspections are going on, disarmament is being carried out, albeit slowly and these must be allowed to continue until the job is done.
  3. No credible evidence has been produced that points to weapons of mass destruction being either in existence or capable of use. In a classic 'Catch 22' the USA says it will attack if Iraq has such weapons and will attack if Iraq hasn't on the grounds that Iraq will be lying anyway.
  4. Some of the evidence that has been produced has been demonstrably false.

We therefore totally oppose this reckless venture and want to make our opposition clear.

On a personal note, I have now been on the London and Manchester demonstrations and have encouraged many others to do the same. We have seen a real reawakening of political activism on a scale unknown since the Vietnam War. Let's keep it up. Let's make Mr Blair and his government realise they can't go on ignoring the people.

Remember, this is a government that is squeezing local government, underfunding many public services and supporting further privatisation. Yet they can write a blank cheque to provide munitions to kill, maim and mulilate innocent people. 5,6,7,8 Spend it on the welfare state.
