Public meeting launches Community Cooperative to provide broadband

Wednesday, May 21, 2003

Yesterday evening, over 50 people attended a public meeting at the Tourist Information Centre called to establish a community co-operative ISP (Internet Service Provider) to provide broadband locally. Considerable enthusiasm was expressed for the venture following an excellent presentation by local consultant Mark Harrison. Nearly everyone paid one pound to join and sign up.

Behind the scenes, a steering group of about a dozen people have been making plans for the not for profit organisation, - provisionally called Global Valey Community Cooperative.

The next steps are to adopt the draft constitution, create a business plan and seek some seed funding.

Many people attending the meeting represented Mytholmroyd and everyone agreed that it was essential for local broadband activation - now planned for 24th September - to be extended to Mytholmroyd.

Those who didn't attend can sign up by downloading a "registration form" from the broadband area of the Hebden Bridge Web, fill it in and deliver with £1 to one of the contact names on the form.

More information about broadband and matters relating to the development of Global Valey Community Cooperative will be posted on the Hebweb broadband section
