Central Street area upgrade

Monday, 17 December 2007

The Chair of Calderdale Council's Regeneration and Development Scrutiny Panel, Cllr. Barry Collins, says councillors should try to find a way forward on how to improve the surface of a group of streets in Hebden Bridge.
Hilton Street, Pitt Street, Central Street and Fielding Street are currently unmade and unadopted. Nearby Salem Street is also unadopted but has been improved to a good standard.

Members of the Panel will discuss a report outlining how the condition of streets can be improved when they meet next Thursday (December 20). They will look at ways in which the improvements to the streets could be funded and their possible adoption by the Council.

The estimated cost of the works is in the region of £100,000 and the report will outline sources of funding for the work. The Council has been successful in securing £10,000 from the Safer Routes to Schools Project and £10,000 from Private Sector Housing under the Decent Neighbourhood Initiative. Hebden Royd Town Council has offered match funding of £20,000.

At their meeting, Members of the Scrutiny Panel will consider the results of consultations with residents about how the improvements can be paid for.

"This is an issue which has been of concern to the local community for many years, now. The Council has already secured funding from external sources totalling 40% towards the cost of the scheme and we now need to look at how we can move things forward."
