Local women from Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Luddenden got together on June 08 to run the Race for Life in Burnley, raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

The team of eight – The Punchin Judys – get their name from their regular weekly training sessions at Boxercise, led by instructor Kate Dakers.

Only one team member had participated in a Race for Life event previously so it was tough training for some, pounding the pavements of Hebden Bridge up to three months before the race, in all weather conditions.

''All our efforts paid off and we're proud to say we've raised over £1200 for Cancer Research UK. Everyone finished the race in reasonable time with Sharron bringing the team home somewhere around the 20 minute mark. We had great fun, finishing the day off with a well deserved pint together".

''We're going to do another race in the near future so we're keeping our training up and encourage other women to join us" said Kate Dakers.

First over the finish line was Elizabeth Greenwood (9) who recently became UK biathlon champion for her age group. Her time was 18 min 35 seconds
