Heritage Days Weekend

Civic Trust welcome involvement of our local community

Wednesday, 16 July 2008

The annual Heritage Open Days will take place in September and Calder Civic Trust would welcome the involvement of the local community in celebrating the many historical buildings and their fascinating pasts in the local area.

Activity is now being planned for Saturday, 13 September and local community groups and organisations are getting involved to commemorate our colourful history with visitors and locals.

Greeting visitors arriving by train, the Friends of Hebden Bridge Station are  organising displays within the station’s own listed buildings. To complement this, a large-scale model railway, showing the station as it looked over 50 years ago, will be displayed at Hope Chapel.

Other local businesses have given their commitment to the event - The Picture House showing local films; The Council Building opening its historic chamber and  Moyles, a well-documented local landmark building, all joining the celebrations.

Calder Civic Trust are welcoming further involvement and would like to hear from any groups or individuals prepared to open up their property or contribute in some way.  Any events whether cultural, retail, historical or simply entertainment could help the Heritage Open Day be a real success.

Diana Monahan of the Local History Society urged others to get involved “Members of the Local History Society are happy to provide historical background information and images of buildings to help local shops who could provide a history board or sheet for visitors. We’re getting involved ourselves with the display and history of a 150 yr old wedding dress belonging to the local Crossley dynasty.”

Organisers are asked to contact Calder Civic Trust who are coordinating and helping to register buildings wishing to organise an event on that day.   All properties must be registered by 1 August 2008 so they can be made available on the Heritage Days on-line directory.

Nationally, events are taking place between Thursday 11 and Sunday 14 September. For more information on times and pre-booking details please check the Heritage Open Days website at www.heritageopendays.org. The online directory will be available from mid-July.
