Rushbearing Festival

Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival

The focal point of the festival, the only one of its kind in Yorkshire, is a 16 foot high, 2 wheeled thatched Rushcart pulled by 60 local men dressed in Panama Hats, White Shirts, Black Trousers and Clogs with a Cart Maiden riding on top. They are accompanied by music and teams of Morris dancers, Clog Dancers and Mummers. The colourful procession is an unforgettable spectacle as it winds it’s way down from the village of Warley, through to Sowerby by Saturday tea-time. On Sunday after a Rushbearing Service at St. Peters Church, Sowerby, the procession continues to Ripponden via the hill top villages. The total distance covered is 9 miles.
