Little heaps of Free Compost

Monday, 20 September 2010

'Little heaps' are going to be around this Saturday.

Following on from the success of Calderdale 's 'Big Heap' compost giveaways at Milner Royd in Sowerby Bridge, new 'little heap' events have been organised to give away free compost in other areas, including ours.

The heaps will be unloaded at specific areas for Calderdale residents to collect their own free bag of compost for use on their gardens and allotments.

The 'little heap' areas on Saturday 25 September will be at:

  • Calder Holmes Park, Hebden Bridge (Corner of Park at the end of footpath from Station Road into Park)
  • Heptonstall Allotments (Car Park By Bowling green leave at far end next to piles of Wood chip)
  • West Street /Blind Lane Car Park, Todmorden

The compost giveaway events have been running for three years and prove to be extremely popular. The innovative recycling scheme produces compost by mixing green waste from parks with fallen leaves collected by street cleaning teams.

The scheme won a Civic Trust Award for environmental innovation last year, and also includes using the compost as a top dressing in Calderdale parks.

Mark Dempsey, Support Services Manager for Calderdale Council Parks and Streetscene service, said:

"The composting project enables us to improve green recycling targets, comply with environmental legislation and improve public awareness of the benefits of compost, as well as reducing the amount of street waste being sent to landfill."

Calderdale residents will require proof of residency. 50 green bags will be available at each site on a first come basis.
