Hebden Bridge & District Old People’s Welfare Committee is the Mayor’s chosen charity

Thursday, 25 June 2020

On Wednesday, 10th June Hebden Royd Town Council held its Annual Meeting of the Town Council remotely. The main item of business was to elect our new Mayor, Cllr Val Stevens, for the coming year.

Cllr Stevens said, "I am honoured and privileged to become the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council this year as it gives me an opportunity to develop the aims of the Council to make our community Age Friendly. This recent crisis has highlighted just how devastating Covid 19 has been to older people and this is why I have chosen the Old People's Welfare Committee as my charity for this year".

Cllr Stevens added, “Once again our community has come together to help one another, with those who are able, providing assistance to people in at-risk groups who are self-isolating or social distancing and unable to shop, socialise freely or mix with others”.

The Old Peoples Welfare Committee is an organisation that has been at the forefront helping others and their website www.opwc.org.uk has been a valuable resource for those in need of help and has set up ways to connect people with others who are also isolating or distancing, through telephone trees, letter writing, book clubs, and other ‘virtual’ ways of socialising.

Look out for fundraising events when circumstances allow but in the meantime if you wish to donate to the Mayor's Charity you can do so via the Mayor’s Charity:
