Making Friends Community Kitchen

Friday, 9 June 2023

There will be an opportunity to enjoy tasty Syrian food when the Friends of the Picture House host a Community Kitchen event at Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge, on Saturday June 17 from 12.30pm-3pm.

The food is being prepared by Syrian asylum seekers mostly living in Halifax. Links have been forged over the years between the Friends of the Picture House's Making Friends group and refugee and asylum seekers in Halifax with regular visits arranged to matinees at the Picture House for families and children.

Earlier this year, the Friends started the Making Friends Kitchen project, a regular opportunity for members of the asylum seeker group placed in hostels to meet, choose menus, cook together and share food in a safe space.

Kate Higham, chair of the Friends, said the asylum seekers wanted to give something back to the Hebden Bridge community for supporting them over the years. The event is being supported by Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary.

The buffet food will be free to enjoy but donations will be welcome to enable the Making Friends Kitchen project to continue.
