A fascinating programme of mostly contemporary work written especially for the marimba and performed by one of the rising stars of the instrument.

Joe began playing percussion in 2005 and has performed all over the UK and abroad as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician in a huge array of musical contexts from contemporary classical music to African drumming at venues including the Wigmore Hall, St. Martin in the Fields, Cadogan Hall, Sadler's Wells Theatre, The O2 and London's Southbank Centre. He has also made several appearances on national television.

Choirs in the Chapel

Ars Nova Sacra and Glasgow Madrigirls

Two excellent and highly contrasting choirs in a special Festival double bill. Ars Nova Sacra is a chamber ensemble from Budapest, well known throughout Hungary for its compelling blend of early and contemporary music. In the superb acoustic of Wainsgate Chapel the group will perform works by Gibbons, Liszt, Gesualdo, Monteverdi, Kodály and Bartók amongst others.

Coming from a different place, geographically and musically, Glasgow Madrigirls present a varied programme including a selection of women's work songs from around the world, and a new piece by Glasgow based composer Drew Hammond. The group consists of female undergraduates, postgraduates, alumni and friends of the University of Glasgow. Madrigirls by Claire Quigley Afternoon tea will be taken in the chapel grounds during the interval between the two concerts. Tea and cake will be available to buy, or why not bring a picnic?

Glasgow Madrigirls Vocal Workshop with co-directors Katy Cooper and Catriona Hutchinson

A chance to explore work-related music from Gaelic waulking songs to those sung by American Trade Unions. Workshop participants will be invited to perform with Madrigirls at the afternoon concert. Everyone welcome - no need to be able to read music.

Following a sell-out three-night run last year, the Hebden Shorts team (comprising writers Anna Clarkson, Paul Coates, Mark Illis, Stephen May, P. McCarthy and Dave Simpson & Di Whitley) return to open the Festival with six new short plays.
