We are losing our trees

From John Knapp

Sunday, 24 April 2011

In the Upper Calder Valley there are many new woods that are being planted. It is therefore a shame that no-one is planting trees: There is a difference.

Look across the valley and you will see that the prominent features are individual trees in what was once a planned landscape.

Many of these large trees are now suffering from age, neglect, indifference or downright malevolence. Each year sees the loss of a few more.

They are found in field boundaries, small copses and around perimeters of farmland and are the ones which make our local landscape the way it is and give it history.

None of these feature trees is being replaced and in future years the scene could be bare.

Woods-a-plenty but no trees.
