Wainsgate Chapel Heritage Open Day

Monday, 8 September 2014

Saturday 13th September is the start of the Heritage Open Weekend, during which many historic buildings throughout the country will open their doors to the public. As part of this annual event, Old Town's Wainsgate Chapel will be open to visitors during the afternoon.

Hidden away high up on the Wadsworth hillside, Wainsgate Chapel is a grade II* listed building boasting a superb interior with beautiful stained glass windows, delicate mahogany carving and a highly impressive marble pulpit.

Though no longer in use as a place of worship, concerts and other events are held there on a regular basis, and the attached Sunday School is home to various artists, sculptors, writers, photographers and musicians whose work will be on show throughout the weekend.

During the afternoon there will be recitals on the historic church organ by Professor David Baker, slide shows presented by members of the Hebden Bridge Local History Society and afternoon teas provided by the Wadsworth Environment Group.

At 2.30pm there will be a special event to mark the relocation to Wainsgate of a 1st World War memorial, formerly situated in the now-disused Old Town Methodist Chapel.

Introduced by Geoff Hughes, Chair of Wadsworth Parish Council, there will also be readings by the established and acclaimed actress Eileen O'Brien, and a re-dedication of the memorial by the Reverend John Muir.

Wainsgate Chapel will be open to the public between 2 and 4.30pm and admission is free.

Further information such as how to get there, and news of other forthcoming events – including Bach Reloaded, a superb jazz/classical fusion concert by double bassist Jenni Molloy and her trio – can be found at www.wainsgate.co.uk
