Job Vacancies at the Arvon Centre

Jobs are available at The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank, an 18th-century mill-owner’s house near Heptonstall, which once belonged to Ted Hughes. Arvon have been running residential creative writing courses at Lumb Bank for over 40 years. The house stands in 20 acres of steep woodland and has a breathtaking view to the valley below – a Pennine landscape of woods and rivers, weavers’ cottages, packhorse trails and ruins of old mills. It is half a mile from the historic village of Heptonstall and two miles from Hebden Bridge.

1. Interim Centre Director (Maternity Cover)

Closing date: 10am, Wednesday 19 April

Base: Lumb Bank, The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire

Salary: £25,560 per annum

Hours: 34 hours per week (0.8 FTE)

Starting mid-May 2017

Arvon is looking for an exceptional individual to manage all aspects of Lumb Bank, our spectacular Yorkshire writing centre, during the maternity leave of its Centre Director.

2. Relief Centre Assistant at Lumb Bank, Yorkshire

Closing date: 10am, Monday 24 April

Reports to: Centre Director

Base: The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank, Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire

Salary: £11.37 (gross) per hour including holiday allowance

Hours: This is casual contract. Hours are variable, depending upon Arvon’s needs. You are not obliged to accept work on every occasion we offer it to you.

Lumb Bank is Arvon’s Yorkshire writing centre; the 18th century house was once owned by Ted Hughes. Relief Centre Assistants assist in hosting tutors, students and visitors during the Centre’s creative writing courses, covering as host when the Centre Assistant or Assistant Centre Director is unavailable. This is casual contract; hours are variable, depending upon Arvon’s needs. Relief Centre Assistants report to the Centre Director.

3. Kitchen Gardener at Lumb Bank, Yorkshire

Reports to: Centre Director

Base: Lumb Bank, The Ted Hughes Arvon Centre, Heptonstall, West Yorkshire

Salary: £11.37 (gross) per hour including holiday allowance.

Hours: This is an annualised hours post of up to 192 hours per year, to be worked between February and November to meet the seasonal variations of the needs of the garden. An initial contract of 18 months will be offered.

Lumb Bank is Arvon’s Yorkshire writing centre; the 18th century house was once owned by Ted Hughes. The Kitchen Gardener will maintain and develop the kitchen garden and small greenhouse at Lumb Bank, with responsibility for the planting, tending and production of fruit and vegetables including preparation and general care of the beds throughout the year. The kitchen garden produce will enhance and support Lumb Bank’s seasonal menus.

The three Arvon writing centres have courses tutored by some of the most acclaimed authors writing today, including Mark Haddon, Bernardine Evaristo, Jim Crace, Sinead Morrissey, Simon Armitage, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Willy Russell, Malorie Blackman and Melvin Burgess. Past tutors have included Angela Carter, Salman Rushdie and Beryl Bainbridge.
