Greening the Economy

Monday, 18 March 2019

Over 80 people came together in Hebden Bridge on 9th March in the biggest event to date organised by Calderdale Compass.

Calderdale Compass

The event was opened by Alan Simpson, former Labour MP for Nottingham South who gave a powerful and inspiring presentation on the climate crisis and the economy. Finn Jensen, Chair of Calderdale Green Party, and James Baker, Leader of Calderdale Liberal Democrats, both spoke about the many recent local initiatives and responses to the threats posed by climate change.

Jane Speller, Coordinator of Calderdale Compass, brought the afternoon to a close by making an unanswerable case for wide ranging electoral reform, including a proportional voting system and the use of citizens' assemblies.

A follow up event will be held in Mytholmroyd on Monday 25th March to plan the next phase of local community activism in respect of climate change, democratic renewal and ending the politics of austerity.

The local group formed in 2018 and they hold regular public meetings. The next informal planning meeting will be held on:

Monday 25th March from 7.30pm
St Michael’s Church, Church Street, Mytholmroyd,

Tea and coffee will be available.
