Town Hall Booking cancelled

Wednesday, 31 July 2019

Chris WilliamsonCalderdale Trades Council invited Chris Williamson, the twice suspended Labour MP for Derby, to speak at Hebden Bridge Town Hall on Saturday, 3 August.

The Trades Council described Chris Williamson as being "a firm supporter of Palestine and a strong critic of Israel's Government's policies. He has been a Labour MP since 2010 with a brief break in 2015/6."

The event was entitled "Will the next Labour Government deliver?"

The meeting has been cancelled by the Town Hall.

The HebWeb wrote to the Hebden Bridge Community Association whose trustees manage the Town Hall for an explanation.

Rory Deighton, for the Trustees of Hebden Bridge Community Association, told the HebWeb, "As a community organisation we constantly balance the needs of all of our stakeholders.

"This issue was discussed at our Board meeting last week where the Trustees agreed that the event, and likely protest was likely to have an impact on staff and other users of the building that day that we could not accept. We have a wedding booked the same day and we agreed to prioritise the special day for these two people, their family and guests over any other obligations.

"Accordingly we cancelled the booking, and the organisers of the meeting have accepted this decision."
