Bagels, lox and cream cheese
Although I come from a long line of fish mongers, we never had smoked salmon at home. Ours was a 'wet fish' business and, I suppose, smoked salmon is a delicatessen ingredient.
It wasn't until I got down to college in London that I discovered it. My flatmate's girlfriend was Jewish and from California and this dish is a popular breakfast or brunch with American Jews.
For two people you will need 2 plain bagels (New York Bakery from that mini supermarket in Crown Street) and 100g Lox (smoked salmon). Get the best. The 'irresistible' one from the Co-op is good. And cream cheese. Philadelphia is fine. Half a lemon and some freshly ground black pepper.
Split the bagels and toast lightly. Spread generously with cream cheese and layer the salmon on top. Squeeze on some lemon juice and add some freshly ground black pepper. Enjoy!
