Move to 4g

From Ms. P. Finch

Monday, 16 June 2025

As a non-techy person who does live in the world of digital on various devices I am finding the latest news of moves to 4g alarming.

As far as I understand I will no longer be able to use my older mobiles – though some can be upgraded. Mine rely on 2g & 3g for them to work (a Samsung Smart phone A10 and a venerable Nokia 3310  - yes it still works!!!)

Building in this obsolecence isn't good for the planet. What a waste of perfectly usable devices.

Many people will be caught out when they 'go down' and will have extra costs to upgrade.

I have lots of questions. What will happen to 2g and 3g? Will it be used for other services. What is the background to all this?

As 4G has been available since 2012, I don't think this is such an actual issue, Pat. You can get a new smart phone for as little as £50. The real issue is when are we getting 5G!? Full fibre, apparently next year.
