No more cooking
By Chas Nicholson
I read recently that the eccentric artists Gilbert and George, who live in East London, do not have a kitchen in their flat. They have an electric kettle and a tin with instant coffee. They get all their meals out.
We have started incorporating this in our own lifestyle, here in Hebden Bridge.
On Mondays we get a Nasi Goreng Special takeaway from Hannah's Kitchen at The Trades Club. It's £12 and is enough for two people.
On Tuesday we might get 2 fish and a small chips from Crown Fisheries for £15. Over the years, this chip shop has gone up and down, but it's good these days.
Wednesday can see us at Nelson's Wine Bar where you can get a portion of Aromatic Coconut Rice with Moong Dahl for £21. This restaurant is one of the jewels in the Hebden Bridge crown.
Thursday is market day so we will probable get something from Vinod at The Dosa. He has a variety of Indian street food. We will probably spend £10 – 15 there.
Friday is pizza day and we live very close to Marco's Café in Valley Road. Other pizza outlets are available. The Marguerita is £12. I used to be able to eat a whole one but now it's a half each. In the summer, on the terrace, overlooking the river you could believe you are in Naples!
On Saturday we got a takeaway from Jim's Falafels, £12 for two.
We are fortunate to live within 10 minutes' walk of all these outlets. Why would we cook for ourselves

There are many people who I'm sure would like to have the wherewithal to live a lifestyle like yours, but to suggest a regime of eating out or having takeaways every day is, to say the least, a bit insensitive to so many people here.
So as you tuck into your 'Aromatic Coconut Rice with Moong Dahl', think of those of us for whom a baked potato with grated cheddar is in itself a bit of a treat, and yet costs under 50p.
But of course I keep forgetting the Hebden is now just a Northern outpost of Notting Hill. And to use the multi-millionaire artists Gilbert and George as a role model says it all really.

Chas thanks for sharing your thoughts on eating out in and around Hebden, I took a look at your blog on the basis of how much I liked your writing too. Thanks
I appreciate not everyone can eat out so much but I thought you showed some options that were good value for money and I hope you continue to review what is on offer
