Trades Club to bring back jazz

Saturday, 27 March 2021

As Hebden Bridge Trades Club puts together its post pandemic line-up they’ve decided to bring back jazz.

Fans of Alice Coltrane will be looking forward to harpist Alina Bzhezhinska who opens the jazz season whipping up a storm fusing strings with effect pedals and electronics.

The harp is not a common instrument in jazz but Bzhezhinska uses a combination of through a combination of original works and covers drawing on influences like Dorothy Ashby’s Afro-harping as well as paying homage to funk and hip-hop’s greatest innovators.

For this gig she is supported by bassist Mikele Montolli, drummer Adam Teixeira and Joel Prime on percussion.

“Whilst closing down during the pandemic has been tough it did give us space to refresh our booking policy and given how strong British jazz is at the moment we wanted to give domestic and international performers a platform,” says Trades Club Promoter Mal Campbell.

“Alina is a genuine innovator as a harpist, but offers audiences a fascinating mix of her own compositions and a carefully curated interpretation of songs from different genres.”

Alina Hip Harp Quartet play the Trades on Sunday 3 October. To book www.thetradesclub.com.
