Cragg Vale Tennis Club celebrates 100 years with Centenary Open Day

Cragg Vale Tennis Club is celebrating a remarkable milestone this September - its 100th birthday, making it one of the oldest tennis clubs in Calderdale.

Founded in 1925, the club has been part of the Cragg Vale community for a century, offering generations of people the chance to enjoy the game.

To mark the occasion, the club is hosting a special Centenary Open Day on Saturday, 13th September 2025, with matches, junior activities and plenty of family fun. Everyone is welcome, whether you are member or simply curious about trying tennis.

The club has a fascinating history. Since the 1960s it has been based in the former grounds of New Cragg Hall – a once-opulent mansion house that burned down in 1921.

Visitors can still see traces of the old estate around the courts, giving the club a unique setting and a strong link to Calderdale's rich heritage.

Chris Gifford, Cragg Vale Tennis Club's chair told the HebWeb, "We're proud to be celebrating 100 years of tennis in Cragg Vale. This is a chance for the whole community to join in – whether you're picking up a racquet for the first time, bringing the kids along for some fun, or just stopping by for a slice of birthday cake. We'd love to see as many people as possible."

The day will feature:

  • Club championship matches showcasing the best local talent
  • Junior games and coaching for all ages
  • Guided tours of the club's facilities, including newly revamped courts and clubhouse
  • Refreshments and a birthday cake to share

As part of the celebrations, the club is inviting people to share old photographs and memories of tennis in Cragg Vale, which will be displayed on the day.
