Maghribibeat, quiz night, Palestinian evening and book launch at the Trades

Sunday, 31 January 2010

Moroccan music maestros Maghribibeat play a fundraiser for Project X Calderdale at the Trades on Friday February 5th.

Maghribibeat are the now the leading exponents of North African sounds in West Yorkshire and all proceeds from the event will go to non-for-profit social enterprise Project X aiming to create an innovative drop-in and forum service for and by young people in the Upper Calder Valley.

The weekend is welcomed in with the hotly contested monthly quiz on Thursday 4th February as teams try to make sense of the challenging picture round before wolfing down a selection of tasty meat and veggie curries.

The Trades has always hosted Palestinian support groups and on Saturday 6th February Sharyn Lock launches her new book ‘Gaza Beneath the Bombs’, a searing account of her experiences after the Israel army launched an assault on the Gaza strip.

Sharyn volunteered to join the Palestinian ambulances assisting them as they dealt with civilian causalities of the conflict and her new book is a candid insight into a people who faced their oppression with not only courage but with humour.

As well as the book launch there will be a chance to sample Arabic music and food as well as finding about more the ongoing struggles of the Palestinian people to survive in Gaza.

We’re pleased to be hosting two top quality fundraising events supporting good causes locally and internationally, Trades Club spokesperson Paul Clarke told the Hebden Bridge Web.

We’re making something of a habit of hosting book launches by local authors and Sharyn Lock’s new book is a brutally honest account of her experiences with the people of the Gaza strip.
