Daevid Allen at the Trades Club

Monday, 16 August 2010

Daevid AllenThe godfather of British psychedelia Daevid Allen makes a welcome return to the Trades Club on Friday 27 August still flying the flag for love and peace well into his seventh decade.

The word legend is often overused but Daevid Allen who originally hails from Australia has genuinely earned that title forming the hugely influential Soft Machine - featuring Robert Wyatt - before creating Gong who completely redefined British psychedelia in the 1970s.

Since Allen has produced a series of idiosyncratic solo albums on his long road trip through beatnik and hippy culture which was given full rein during a triumphant set at a Metal Elf solstice event at the club last year.

Salsa has returned to the Trades with a vengeance after a short break and Saturday 28th August is the first all day dance event showcasing a number of styles. Classes start at 10am with a Merengue and salsa workshop followed by an adult improver class in Ruesda salsa in the afternoon.

The dance marathon is rounded off in the evening with an exclusive live performance by the UK?s top live salsa band Mojito who have spend the last five years developing their high energy show. Majito are never afraid to push the boundaries mixing traditional salsa beats with reggae, funk and hip-hop so expect the student dancers to be strutting their stuff all night long.

Jazz fans are also in for an extra treat on Sunday 29th August at Hxtra7 when Dave Nelson puts on a monthly Sunday lunch session from 1pm with some of the best musicians from across the region and Sunday lunch is on offer for an extra fiver.

?Daevid Allen was simply stunning when he played Mental Elf pulling off a set packed full of invention and classic songs which was more energetic than acts half his age,? Trades Club spokesperson Paul Clarke told the Hebden Bridge Web.

?It?s a real departure for us to host a full day of dancing but our salsa classes have been growing every week so it seemed natural to run some masterclasses culminating in a rare live show in this region by Mojito."
