In February 1817, a small homestead near Hardcastle Crags, with a tangle of names - (Hawden - or Hawdon - Hole, Hoyle or Hall) was invaded by notoriety.   An aged man of no great fortune was found to have been murdered there;  just over a century later, it was providing a welcome for holiday-makers!  Local writer and artist Billy Holt may have inspired the idea of Butlins, before setting off with his horse Trigger in pursuit of adventure.   His benign influence on the historical record offsets the tragedy of death, detection and retribution.   

Freda Kelsall was born in Southport, where she worked for the Public Libraries, trained in speech and drama, and had a novel published, before moving to London to train as a teacher, also beginning to work in TV.  After teaching in London and Hampshire, and writing TV plays part-time, her on-going contract (1973-1995) with YTV to write the dramatised social history series, How We Used to Live, led her to make her home in Hebden Bridge, where she has lived since 1982.

1920s Gala Film (U)

The Picture House, the Friends of the Picture House and the Hebden Bridge Local History Society are delighted to screen the restored footage of the 1925 Hebden Bridge Carnival Parade and Gala.

The historic film has been transferred from celluloid to digital format after being discovered by the Yorkshire Film Archive and is being shown in the cinema this autumn for the first time since the 1920s.

The film is silent with accompanying period music, and is approximately 20 minutes long. Free admission. Doors open 15 minutes before the film’s start time.

Lost Chord Ensemble

Christopher Irvin, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions. He has formed The Lost Chord Ensemble which meets about once a month and supports the Little Theatre.

Rehearsals have begun for the Concert on 16th December. Musicians (with their music stand) are invited to come and play some light music selections. Heptonstall Advent Window Trail

Heptonstall will be hosting its annual Advent Window Trail from the 1st December. Each day in the run up to Christmas, a window display will light up on an evening, the last one being on Christmas Eve, the displays will stay lit until twelfth night.

A trail map with all the displays on it will be available from Heptonstall Post Office from 1st December. A small donation for the map would be very much appreciated and all proceeds will go towards Heptonstall Festival which will be held in July next year.

Author Talk - Halifax Central Library

Hebden Bridge author Sarah Dunnakey will be at Halifax Central Library on Thursday 30th November, to talk about her debut novel ‘The Companion’, which has just been published in paperback by Orion. 

The Companion is a story of buried secrets, set between the 1930s and the present day, in the valleys and moors between Hebden Bridge and Haworth.  Inspired by the real-life history of Gibson Mill in Hardcastle Crags, it tells of Bllly Shaw who has grown up at Potter’s Pleasure Palace, an old cotton mill turned entertainment emporium.

His world changes when he is sent up onto the moor tops to become the companion to another young boy, the wild and unpredictable Jasper Harper, who lives in an isolated house with his mother and uncle, Edie and Charles. Four years after Billy’s arrival Edie and Charles Harper are found dead, ruled a joint suicide. Eighty years later, Anna Sallis the newly appointed custodian of the museum that is now housed in the old mill begins to investigate what happened and unravels fiction from fact, to discover the truth.

Sarah will be reading from The Companion, talking about her writing life and experience as a debut author, and signing copies of the paperback.

The image most people have of Hong Kong is a densely populated bustling city of sky scrapers. However there are over 1,000 sq. kilometres that make up Hong Kong including 260 outlying islands and a National Park which incorporate many wonderful hiking trails over mountains which are very similar in size to those in UK's Lake District. Ian first went to Hong Kong in 1975, was immediately struck with this similarity and soon started exploring the trails. 

Ian spent four years there during his first stay but often returned for short visits. In 2004 he took up another full time job there and stayed until 2011 when he retired. In 2001 he participated in the Hong Kong Trailwalker – a non stop 100km walk across some 20 hills in the New Territories. He's now completed this walk almost every year since then and will be doing it again this November.

This talk will be about hiking in Hong Kong, how things have changed since those early years of discovering the joys of hiking in Hong Kong, and the Trailwalker event. The talk will be illustrated with a number of slides.

Fundraiser for kitchen refurbishment at Wadsworth Community Centre, Old Town

Local rhythm and blues band The 844s will be playing three sets at Wadsworth Community Centre on Saturday 25 November. The event is taking place to help raise funds for the refurbishment of the centre’s kitchen.

Admission costs £5, and doors open at 7.30pm.

Food and cask ales will be available.

The 844s are vocalist and harmonica ace Dave Rigg, lead guitarist Martin McGroarty - a great player with a long musical pedigree, bassist Jerome Dineen, drummer Jim Duffy, and rhythm guitarist and second vocalist Wally Woodcock. The band plays a mixture of original compositions and covers, ranging from slow-burn blues to high-energy rock.

The Hepton Singers: Byrd to Britten - a tribute to Roger Scaife

The Hepton Singers are revisiting some of their favourite repertoire in tribute to Roger Scaife who directed the choir for 25 years, and helped to make the choir what it is today. He introduced the choir over that period to a cornucopia of delicious music, spanning several centuries from the Renaissance to the present day.

The choir will sing music by Byrd, Palestrina, Purcell, Croft, Bach, Bruckner, Vaughan Williams, Britten, and Kodaly. More unusual repertoire will include music by Antonín Tučapský, a Czech composer whose thoughtful, beautiful and deeply spiritual music should be better known, and a new piece by Chris Legg, one of our basses, setting a poem by Emily Dickinson.

Twenty Thousand descend on Hardcastle Crags

A virtual walk from the station to Hardcastle Crags and around, 50 to 100 years ago

By the 1850s, visitors were coming to Hebden Bridge for Hardcastle Crags from the mill towns on both sides of the Pennines, all thanks to the railway. By the turn of the century they were coming in their thousands – an estimated 20,000 over the three-day Whitsun holiday in 1897! Using many images from the Pennine Horizons Digital Archive we will follow in their footsteps to see how different it was all those years ago as they walked from the station to and around the Crags, enjoying all the facilities provided there.  David has lived all his life in the historic West Riding of Yorkshire, moving to Calderdale in 1988. A member of the History Society and a volunteer with Pennine Horizons, he was involved in co-producing an exhibition on the railway and the visitors to Hardcastle Crags, which was mounted at Gibson Mill and in the town.

The Withins Farms

Steven Wood

The ruin of Top Withins on Stanbury Moor is internationally famous as the supposed inspiration for the site of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. In real life, it was one of three Withins farms carved out of the moor in the sixteenth century.

The history of these farms provides a fascinating study of the hill farming economy of the Pennine moors from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.  Steven Wood is an independent historian who has been studying the Haworth area for some thirty years. He has published seven books on Haworth and its neighbouring villages of Oxenhope and Stanbury.  The most recent is his collaboration with Peter Brears on the history of the Withins farms.

1920S Gala Film (U)

The Picture House, the Friends of the Picture House and the Hebden Bridge Local History Society are delighted to screen the restored footage of the 1925 Hebden Bridge Carnival Parade and Gala.

The historic film has been transferred from celluloid to digital format after being discovered by the Yorkshire Film Archive and is being shown in the cinema this autumn for the first time since the 1920s.

The film is silent with accompanying period music, and is approximately 20 minutes long. Free admission.

Doors open 15 minutes before the film’s start time.

Phantom Voices live at the Shoulder of Mutton

Folk rock from the Fylde coast of Lancashire. Phantom Voices are a six-piece band playing a mix of traditional tunes and self-penned songs with a focus on local stories and vocal harmonies.

Lost Chord Ensemble

Christopher Irvin, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions. He has formed The Lost Chord Ensemble which meets about once a month and supports the Little Theatre. Rehearsals have begun for the Concert on 16th December.

Gigspanner - Wadsworth Community Centre

Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span, legendary fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio “Gigspanner” and in the process has established their reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk/roots scene.

This year the trio have recorded a new album ‘The Wife of Urban Law.’

The trio’s visit to Wadsworth is an early stop on their current U.K. tour promoting the brand new album.  For this album, Gigspanner has again used traditional tunes as a starting point, rearranging and improvising them to create inventive, sometimes hypnotic, new pieces.

Already receiving critical praise, Gigspanner’s new album material will be on show at Wadsworth.

Peter is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Sacha Trochet on percussion, both of whom are powerful and intelligent musicians in their own right.

As we have so many talented tellers attending The Shaggy Dog Storytellers at the moment, some long-standing members and performers, others relatively new, every other clubnight during the following twelve months there will be a “floor” night with guest performance tellers in between. This will give the opportunity to tell to all those who wish to do so, but, let me stress, these nights are not just for performers. We also need an audience! 

There are those who prefer to listen to the variety of stories and tellers that these nights offer. I think we have a good night in store with contributions from professional, semi-professional and good amateurs taking part.

As we are so near Halloween, scary stories may well be to the fore!

The Boggarts & How to Trick Them Trail

Small gnome like creatures called Boggarts have been living on the moors around here since before time began. For centuries, they managed to exist peaceably alongside humans, keeping themselves well – hidden in ditches and hedgerows and appearing only to unsuspecting travellers with the promise of a trick if no treat was forthcoming. But gradually humans over farmed the moors, burnt them, built on them and polluted them with their factories and so the Boggarts got angry and became more goblinesque. They set about stealing down into town and causing a right rumpus. And so they still do, especially at this time of year.

Quick to shape shift, slippery in their speech and fast on their humongous hairy feet so their pranks all look like your fault, the stories you'll hear on this How to Trick a Boggart Trail won't only protect you from the wily ways of these halflings but will also teach you how to identify, outwit and even befriend one!

Join master storyteller and Boggart re homer Ursula Holden – Gill on Sunday 29th October at 3pm by the Wavy Steps on Bridgegate as she transforms the town centre into a series of magical hideouts and prankster points you never knew were there! The 1970s was the decade when people seeking an alternative lifestyle - the 'hippies' - began to move to Hebden Bridge in significant numbers. The town started earning a reputation for having a radical edge, attracting kindred spirits and eventually being declared the 4th funkiest town in the world.

Chris and Jenny will cover topics ranging from the Queens Terrace Squat, Aurora wholefoods, new forms of spirituality, the renovation of derelict properties and the wider creative counter culture.  Chris is a former Queens Terrace squatter and now editor of HebWeb. Jenny bought Latham Farm as a ruin in the 1970s and has lived there ever since. Both were involved in gathering material for the recent very popular History Society exhibition with the same title.

"Peace Works" is a local Ceilidh band who have been playing together for many years for community events and to raise funds for charities dear to their hearts. Beginners Appalachian Dance Class - HB Dance Festival

Get down to the Second Hebden Bridge Dance Festival this October and try something new!

Fiddle 'n' Feet are a mixed Appalachian dance team formed over 15 years ago. 

We currently have 10 dancers and 5 musicians and practice in Shipley, West Yorkshire.

We choreograph our own dances which are lively and energetic consisting of traditional Appalachian dance steps from the Appalachian mountains of America. Our musicians play old-time and bluegrass fiddle tunes.

We perform at festivals, dance and charity events mainly in Yorkshire and Lancashire and sometimes further afield.

Anyone wishing to join our workshop will be required to wear hard soled shoes or tap shoes. No experience necessary. Complete beginners welcome. 

Our workshop will consist of a performance of one of our dances. We will teach simple Appalachian steps from this dance which hopefully at the end of the workshop we will all perform. The musicians play old time and bluegrass fiddle tunes.

Radio 2 Folk Award Winner in 2009 Megan Henwood has a growing legion of admirers as of one of Britain's most promising singer-songwriters and we are proud to be a venue on her Autumn Tour to promote her "River" album.  

Following her successful collaboration and tour with Jackie Oates last year and a fabulous show at the Homegrown Festival in Bury, Megan embarked on a national tour Autumn 2016 as special guest of the excellent Show Of Hands. 

This year Megan has played solo shows, joint tours and festivals; and additionally has recorded her third album "River." which "demonstrates the evolving talent and maturity of a singer ..… and a writer whose storytelling is supported by fine melodies and solid musicianship" (Folking.com).

In support we have Yan Tan Tether who play a host of instruments (piano, banjo, guitar, fiddle) but concentrate mostly on creating beautiful a capella arrangements. Their voices create spine-tingling harmonies interspersed with some rollicking good chorus songs. Mike Harding describes them as the "Golden Tonsils of Otley!"

This series of paintings and drawings by artist Simon Manfield illustrates the poem 'Orcadians: Seven Impromptus' by George Mackay Brown, which was published in his first collection, The Storm, in 1954.

Brown’s vision of an Orkney community fuses stillness with drama and the characters of Orkney's people are described with wit, anger, suspicion and melancholy, much like in the telling of a tale or saga.

The collection visualises Brown’s depictions and is a celebration of the poet, the poem and Orkney itself. It is accompanied by a limited edition book published by Kettillonia. Also included in the exhibition are new works, some giving hints to future drawing projects.

This month at the Shaggy Dog Storytellers we welcome storytelling’s best kept secret, Tristan Langlois, with his brand - new show ‘Silence and the Wizard’s Laugh.’ 8pm, Friday 29th September. Upstairs in the Stubbing Wharf, King Street, Hebden Bridge. Entry ££7.

Tristan isn’t exactly a newcomer to the art form. He ran the award-winning heritage theatre company Past Pleasures for many years, during which time he told tales in (and was occasionally slung out of) most of the great castles and manor houses of England).

Tristan says he now continues to work for museums and galleries as a storyteller whether they want him to or not! However, (as yet) Tristan is practically unheard of on the club circuit, so when he joined our team of tellers shortly after moving to Hebden Bridge last year, we rubbed our hands with glee knowing that we’d stuck gold.

This chap (and he is a chap) is nothing shy of brilliant! Witty, well-polished and very, very funny.

In his own words, Tristan specialises in ‘the epic, the obscure, the scurrilous and the obscene delivered with relish and what he hopes is engaging charm’. Come and be amongst the first to hear him before he’s wanted everywhere and you’ll see exactly what we mean…..

Linda Powell

The Co-op chemist in Albert Street was an essential part of community life. Having worked there in the 1960s and in other pharmacies in Hebden Bridge in a career spanning forty years Linda has many memories to share. Being behind the chemist counter was rewarding, sometimes sad and often funny as the assistants dealt with many and varied medical conditions. 

Linda describes herself as 'very much a local' having been born in Mytholmroyd and after her marriage moving along the valley to Hebden Bridge. She qualified as an Apothecary Hall Pharmacy technician in 1966 and continued this career in Hebden Bridge. Now she is enjoying a happy and busy retirement.

Acclaimed Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and composer John McHugh's unique UK tour lands in Hebden Bridge with two landmark multimedia pieces based on the power of speech. 

Musicians from the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and acclaimed composer John McHugh bring their highly commended and unique Hidden Voice to the Trades Club next month alongside legendary American composer Steve Reich’s 1988 masterpiece ‘Different Trains’. 

'Hidden Voice' captures the individual stories of people living with dementia and uses the melodies and rhythms in their speech to create a beautiful and emotional musical experience. 

“The effect is incredibly emotional. There’s something about setting speech patterns to music that raises the everyday speech to a poetic and profound level. The words take on a singing quality that speaks directly to the audience.”

Memories of Mytholmroyd

Come along to Memories of Mytholmroyd an evening of fascinating images, stories from the past and the gentle humour and songs of Stanley Accrington.  Hebden Bridge District Old People’s Welfare committee invite you to the first in a series of free Memory Makers social events.

5pm – 8pm at Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

Jan Lymer explains that the Memory Maker project “is an opportunity to help people reconnect with their community and record treasured memories and life histories.  Everyone has a story to tell so come and along and find out how to share yours”.  

Stanley Accrington, a renowned local acoustic and folk singer song writer, will be your host for the evening and Frank Woolrych from the Pennine Digital Archive will talk about how you can add your memories and photographs to the wealth of local history.  

The Memory Makers project has been generously funded by grants from Hebden Royd and Calderdale Council.

Heritage Open Day at the Hebden Bridge Picture House

There will be the chance to step back in time on Saturday September 9 when Hebden Bridge Picture House opens its doors for the annual Heritage Open Day.

Tours

The restored grade-II listed cinema, which was badly flooded on Boxing Day 2015, will be open from 10am to 1pm for tours, a poster sale, a history talk and refreshments.

Cinema manager Rebekah Fozard will lead behind-the-scenes tours of the Picture House at 10.15am and 12.15pm.  Book a place by email.

Talk

In addition Kate Higham, secretary of the Friends of the Picture House, will give a talk on the history of the cinema at 11.15am. She will also be selling copies of her book The Life and Times of a Local Treasure.

It is also hoped that restored footage of the 1925 Hebden Bridge Carnival Parade and Gala will be ready for screening at the open day. The historic film has been transferred from celluloid to 'screen ready' digital format after being discovered by the Yorkshire Film Archive and will be shown in the cinema for the first time since the 1920s.      

Rare, historic film not seen since 1920s which was made at the Hebden Bridge Carnival Parade and Gala in 1925 is being restored and will be shown again at the Picture House. See HebWeb News item

- Round the World on a Single Speed.

From 3 Sep 2015 till 27 Aug 2016 Markus Stitz rode around the world on a customised Surly Ogre with one gear and equipped with bikepacking bags.

During his journey he saw the Aurora Borealis in Iceland, braved minus 17 C in New Mexico, pushed up the world's steepest street in Dunedin, crossed the Australian Outback, cycled through 40 C in Thailand, climbed up to 3150 m in Iran, cycled the Anatolian Highlands and the Alps and rode the famous cobbles of Flanders. All to prove that it can be done. One gear is enough to cycle the world.

Markus is appearing at the Old Gate in Hebden Bridge on 6th September sharing his stories and showing some video's of his epic journey.  Still planning new ventures and adventures Markus will be happy to answer questions on the night.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club Annual Exhibition of Photography 2017

This ever-popular exhibition opens Saturday, 26th August and runs until Sunday, 3rd September 2017 (closed Sunday, 27th August). It takes place at Hebden Bridge Town Hall, St George's Street, Hebden Bridge, HX7 7BY. 

The exhibition is open to the public and is free of charge, it will be manned by club members between 10am and 4pm (weekdays) / 10am and 3pm (weekends).

The exhibits are all by club members and there is opportunity for the public to vote for their favourites.

Hebden Bridge Vintage Weekend

Hebden Bridge will, once again, be the place to be on the 5th and 6th August 2017 when the Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge hosts the iconic charity fund raising Hebden Bridge Vintage Weekend.

This will be the 35th year for the event which is now well established as a premier attraction for the display of some 800 veteran, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, military & commercial vehicles. Last year’s event was our best ever, breaking all records in entrants, spectators and funds raised. With your help we can make this year’s event even bigger.

Held in the heart of Hebden Bridge, at Calder Holmes Park, the open plan layout of the site allows members of the public to get up close to the exhibits and chat to their owners. This is an event with something for the whole family ~ it is far from being merely a show for collectors. Not only will there be splendid vehicles on display but also varied entertainment including live music, fun rides for children, craft & product stalls, together with a wide range of quality catering and refreshment outlets.

Local author Sarah Dunnakey will be launching her debut novel The Companion, which is published this month by Orion.

The Companion is a beautiful and powerfully-told story of buried secrets, set between the 1930s and the present day, in the valleys and moors of West Yorkshire.

Wainsgate Makers Bazaar

The Wainsgate Makers Bazaar will be held at Wainsgate Chapel in Old Town on Saturday 8th July 2017. The principal purpose of the Bazaar is to make a noise about this very special building by hosting an event that aims to make Wainsgate a ‘go to’ destination.

Komal Lad and Amanda Allan’s artwork ‘Vessels’, an installation of 14,000 folded paper birds, will fill the chapel. Artists Sally Dawson, Amanda Farrell and Bp Portrait exhibitor Alan Coulson will have their studio’s open as part of the wider Hebden Bridge Open Studios.
Live music throughout the day will create a space to relax so quench your thirst with either tea and homemade cakes, or a variety drinks hosted by pop up pub The Pig and Barrel.  

The Wainsgate Bee group will have a glass-viewing hive and be talking about all things bees and honey between 12pm to 1pm.

Bushes and Briars – an evening of Scottish and English folk song

On Saturday 8 July at 7:30pm at Heptonstall Parish Church, renowned Hebden Bridge-based chamber choir the Hepton Singers are having fun with folk songs. Being the adventurous choir we are, we decided to explore some of the lesser-known regions of the genre, as well as one or two classics including Bushes and Briars and The Iona Boat Song.  

We’ve broadened the definition of folk song to include Pseudo-Yoik by the Finnish composer Jaako Mäntyjärvi, and Thea Musgrave’s incomparable Subway Piranhas.

The programme will also include three new and original folk song settings by the choir’s musical director, Alison West.

In 1978, at the age of 58, Cyril Mount (painter, arts educator, ex-soldier, peace activist and husband and father) set off for the ashram of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) in Poona, India, having become a devotee several years earlier.

Since the fifties Cyril had struggled to find inner peace, especially troubled by the recurring trauma of his wartime experiences. This led to a severe mental breakdown in the early sixties.

BASSE are a rock power-duo from Catania (Italy). Heavily influenced by blues, garage rock, the band relocated to Manchester in 2017. After the release of the first EP, "Start", the duo participated in a number of music festivals as well as numerous gigs around Sicily plus also being chosen to open for: Nobraino, The Zen Circus and Radio Moscow. In the summer of 2016 the band returned to the studio to record their first album entitled "The Right Way To Go Wrong" due for release in 2017.

Kelly's Heroes are a local 3 piece who formed on 12/12/12 having met through friends of friends over their interest in music. They have released one EP so far and are just in the process of releasing their new EP "For The Years To Come".

Calderdale Council has appointed a natural flood management specialist as part of its work to reduce the risk of flooding across the Calder Valley. Rob will be presenting an outline of his role and what he hopes to achieve as Natural Flood Management Project Officer.

Rob Twiggs said, "I believe natural flood management alone is not the answer to reducing flood risk, but when delivered as part of an integrated catchment wide approach with engineered flood defences, sustainable drainage systems and flood resilience measures, such as property level protection, NFM can make a positive contribution to reducing flood risk."

2017 marks the 5th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the new Town Hall extension as well as 120 years since the old building opened. To mark these events, and with the benefit of funding from the Big Lottery's Celebrate programme, we are having a 5th Birthday Party on Saturday 24th June which brings together a number of events and projects into one big party atmosphere:

The 24th June is the first weekend of the wonderful Hebden Bridge Arts Festival so, in collaboration we are hosting some of the same street performers and others in our Courtyard between 12 and 4pm. Our Waterfront Hall is hosting the Hebden Royd Town Council's Kids Fest - with a birthday and water theme between 12 and 3pm. 

And then from 4pm everyone is invited for tea, coffee, juice and most importantly lots of cake in our Waterfront Hall until it all runs out. Come along and be amongst the first to see our new mosaic in the Courtyard (created through a community arts programme), enjoy an Arts Festival sculpture in the Courtyard and installations in the basement.  It's going to be a wonderful day, we're sure the sun will shine - so please come along and join us!

Local playwright, Freda Kelsall, adapts and directs the Little Theatre’s next offering, Summer Fancy, based on a Thomas Hardy short story.

Summer Fancy was first produced by Freda's theatre company, Bridge Theatre, at The Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield, in June 1992.

Freda Kelsall says, 'Rehearsals are going well, and there's great chemistry between the protagonists, Oliver Bairstow as Charles Bradford Raye, Phoebe Farrington as Anna, Diannah Miller as Edith, and Ben Sweeny as her husband, Henry. Rosalinda O’Connor and Matt Parker are also excellent as Raye’s sister, Jane, and his friend, William Eagle, adding to the humour, and pathos of the play.'

Hebden Bridge Brass Band Summer Concert

7pm, at Mytholmroyd Community Centre, featuring Dominic Longhurst, Soprano Cornet Player with Brighouse and Rastrick Band, who will perform pieces for both cornet and trumpet.  

Dominic is a young cornet star from Australia who's been awarded the Global Academy Project Student exchange to Norway and England - where he subsequently took on the principal cornet seat at Brighouse and Rastrick whilst still only 19 years old.  

This year, Dominic has taken on the soprano position further demonstrating his burgeoning talent and versatility, which he will share with his playing in the concert.  The band are delighted that Dominic has agreed to perform with them for a terrifically entertaining evening.

Entry is by voluntary contribution thanks to the generosity of Hebden Bridge Town Council.

Deborah Andrews - Walking the Lights

Shortlisted for Not the Booker Prize 2016

Deborah Andrews is an award-winning theatre practitioner turned novelist. Born in Windsor, she moved to Glasgow in 1990 to study for a BA in Drama at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

She went on to work as a performer, workshop leader, director and writer. In 1999, her theatrical adaptation of Dream State: The New Scottish Poets won a Scotsman Fringe First Award and in 2002 she co-founded Solar Bear Theatre Company.

She established the first year-round Deaf Youth Theatre in the UK and scripted six main-stage and several community productions, winning several awards. Since 2014, Deborah’s lived in Lancaster, where she teaches creative writing.

All proceeds from the event will be going to Ravenscliffe@Spring Hall – a purpose-built Sixth Form College and Community Centre, track-side at Spring Hall, Halifax. Due to open 2018, the centre will offer exciting and innovative learning opportunities for up to 70 young people with learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities. Friends of the Picture House present

Thelma and Louise

The Friends of the Picture House presentation on Saturday, June 17 at 4.30pm will be Thelma and Louise, the 1991 American road movie directed by Ridley Scott.

The film's stars, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, were nominated for best actress Oscars and the film launched the career of a young Brad Pitt. Controversial on its release, Thelma and Louise is now considered a classic.

Annual Hebden Bridge Brass Band March Contest

From 12.30 p.m. St Georges Square, Hebden Bridge.

This year sees a record number of bands entering the annual Hebden Bridge Brass Band March Contest.  

The first band will march off at 12.30 p.m.  Each band will be judged on their marching prowess and the best will be awarded the deportment prize.  

In the square, each band will play a hymn tune and a contest march.  

There is a range of prizes and the overall winners will be presented with the Alan Bottomley Memorial Trophy.  

Station lift consultation: visit from Nicola Wright of Network Rail

Nicola Wright of Network Rail's visit to consult re proposed lifts is re-scheduled for 1pm Monday 12 June. Everyone is most welcome. We need to your views too. See you there!

The lift access proposals can be viewed on Calderdale's planning web. However the application makes no mention of resurfacing the area in front of the station entrance which is current very difficult to walk across, impossible to wheel across.

In a recent meeting with Nicola Wright of Network Rail we discussed the need for resurfacing, though no formal agreement was made. This needs to be brought to her attention when she comes to consult at the station at 1pm on Monday 12 June.

We should also discuss wheelchair access to the booking office. I believe there is a second window which could potentially be lowered thus offering two alternatives and not impeding access for those of us who do not use a wheelchair.

Another issue which needs discussion but is not within Network Rail’s remit, is access to the station for those who do not drive and are not served by one of the buses which stops at the station. This issue needs to be raised with Calderdale. Having a fully accessible station has limitations if some disabled people cannot reach the entrance.

Lost Chord Ensemble

The Little Theatre, Holme Street, Hebden Bridge.

Christopher Irvin, who conducts the local Little Theatre Choir has a wealth of light music including some of his own compositions. He has formed The Lost Chord Ensemble which meets about once a month and supports the Little Theatre.

Boundary Walk

The full walk takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in the South Pennines and, in walking terms, is described as moderately difficult. It is approximately 21 miles long and includes the beautiful wooded valleys of Hardcastle Crags and the commanding heights of the moors above the Luddenden Valley.

Runners are welcome to join in but we do ask them to check in and start their run as early as possible.

During Alex's maternity non leave, she visited the park. A lot. Not very remarkable you may think but wait until you hear what she learned on her visits. Stories from all over the world, short ones, long ones, happy ones, others not so.

Telling of tales new or old will be given the standard Ultradish treatment, mixing the traditional with the contemporary. Join her on a journey from your seat to the skies, via the local pond. If you have a babel fish, bring that too.

Yorkshire Silent Film Festival

Yorkshire Silent Film Festival is a month-long celebration of silent film with live music taking place in cinemas, theatres and community venues across Yorkshire. This year's festival runs May 5 - 31 with two live screenings at Hebden Bridge Picture House on Saturday 13 and 20 May (doors at 4.15pm).

Beginning with Hitchcock's The Lodger on Saturday 13 May with live musical accompaniment from harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry whose performance in Hebden Bridge was one of the highlights of the 2016 festival. The new programme is now launched 

This year we have an incredible 70 different events happening throughout the Festival week.

As in previous years, there's plenty going on in the Library and throughout the town. We also have a Town Hall Hub this year, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am-9pm and Friday 10am-4pm.

There is a full programme of events in there throughout those days or you can just pop in for a chat, coffee and cake, soup and bread and some free craft activities. All welcome.  

We all know someone who has died, someone who has been bereaved and someone who will miss us when we’re gone. And yet, nearly all of us struggle with thinking about, planning and talking about death. Especially with the people we love the most. Each May, a small group of Tod folk create a festival to make space for those conversations. In lots of different ways.

This is about fellow citizens, mucking in to the difficult stuff together, in the hope of making things a little softer.

Created and produced by Kaye Martindale and Kay Boardman 'Dreaming of the Daylight Days' is a collection of poetry and painting by members of our weekly creative dementia sessions and is the perfect embodiment of the group's creative spirit.

As a poet, I know how hard it is to reflect this journey in words. Yorkshire Silent Film Festival is a month-long celebration of silent film with live music taking place in cinemas, theatres and community venues across Yorkshire. This year's festival runs May 5 - 31 with two live screenings at Hebden Bridge Picture House on Saturday 13 and 20 May (doors at 4.15pm).

Beginning with Hitchcock's The Lodger on Saturday 13 May with live musical accompaniment from harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry whose performance in Hebden Bridge was one of the highlights of the 2016 festival. Finishing with the gorgeously romantic drama 7th Heaven on 20 May, with Jonathan Best performing live on piano.

Debs Newbold's 'King Lear'

As part of the 3rd Hebden Bridge Folk Roots Festival, on Friday 12th May the jaw droppingly talented Debs Newbold will be performing her innovative version of Shakespeare’s King Lear, upstairs in The Stubbing Wharf Pub at 8pm for a mere £7 (or Free Entry for Festival Ticket Holders)!

Those of you who attended her ‘Bawdy Bardess Tales’ in January 2016 will know well how Debs can pack out a room and why I can’t urge you enough to put this date in your diary and encourage everyone you know to come along and see her in action; she is absolutely spellbinding!

The Original Hebden Bridge Ghost Walk

Naked races, witchcraft, the Black Death, Robin Hood and a host of other horrible histories await in 'Beyond the Veil of Calderdale'; a spine tingling, grizzly ghost walk first commissioned by Hebden Bridge Arts Festival and led by Nationally Award Winning Storyteller Ursula Holden Gill.

Following its repeated sell out success in 2014, Ursula further developed these deliciously dark authentic collections into an annual Hebden Bridge Ghost Walk which currently runs every weekend throughout the month of October.

However, as a special Folk Roots Festival event she'll be leading 'The Original Hebden Bridge Ghost Walk' from the Wavy Steps in the centre of town (HX7 8EX) at 6pm on Saturday 13th May 2017. This month, we welcome The 3 Troubadors who will be bringing their 'Mobile Dreams' to the Shaggy Dog Storytelling Club on Friday 28th April 2017.

“Mobile Dreams” is a poetic, funny and warm storytelling show for adults about the everlasting human search for truth and connection, freedom and beauty. In a playful stream of English spiced with their native tongues (Norwegian, Finnish and Dutch) the three performers behind “Mobile Dreams” tell a string of tales both mythical and personal all connected by the language of dreams. 

The 3T's are Markus Luukonen (Finland),Tom van Outryve (Belgium) andTorgrim Mellum Stene (Norway).They met as part of LABO, a yearly laboratory for research and development for professional European storytellers. The group was formed in Ghent in Belgium in May 2015. The boys are currently touring a number of UK story clubs and we're really excited to be one of them! Hope to see you there! 

The Hepton Singers presents Kilts and Clogs

Popular local chamber choir The Hepton Singers presents Kilts and Clogs, an evening of Scottish and English song.

The concert, which takes place on 29 April at Heptonstall Parish Church, marks the second leg of the choir’s exchange with Scottish choir Rudsambee Company of Singers, with whom it performed a two-choir concert in Edinburgh last year.

Rudsambee is a 20-strong choir based in Edinburgh and directed by Derrick Morgan. The choir sings a wide range of modern, world and renaissance music. Regular performance venues include St Giles Cathedral, Rosslyn Chapel and the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland.

“Rudsambee Company of Singers is a brilliant choir, full of talent and spirit,” says Hepton Singers’ director Alison West. “We loved singing with them last year. For lovers of distinctive choral singing performed with panache, this is an evening not to be missed.”

The concert will feature music from Scottish and English composers, both sacred and from the folk tradition. Pieces include those from James MacMillan, Tom Cunningham and Thea Musgrave, with two folk song arrangements by former Hepton Singer Geoff Adams and the premiere of an exciting new piece by Alison West.

Amanda McDermott said, "Many small interventions, to slow run-off, could result in a significant amount of water being temporarily stored during storm events in our urban areas. During and after the devastating Boxing Day Flood 2015, thousands of us gave our time and money to help friends, family and neighbours recover. If we all work together to take action and invest in our own properties (whether they flood or not) we can help reduce the threat of similar levels of flooding in the future, and the need to help clean up on such a large scale."

Music for Anti Heroes

World Dock Pudding Championship

The 2017 Championship will be held on Sunday 23rd April at Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

Stalls, a food and drink festival and live music will all run alongside this year's championship.

Dock Pudding is a local delicacy little-known outside the Calder Valley area of Yorkshire and the competition was founded in 1971 to help preserve it.

The Pudding is made from the leaves of Polygonum Bistorta (which is not the same as Common Dock, though they look alike) mixed with nettles, oatmeal, onions and seasoning, and served with bacon and eggs.

Competitors prepare a whole cooked breakfast including the Dock Pudding and the winner receives a cup; the judging takes place behind closed doors so that the competitors are unknown to the judges, while the audience can watch the cooking on stage in the hall, with traditional Yorkshire brass band accompaniment.

The Dock Pudding Championship will be a highlight of the food and drink festival on the day where local producers will be showing off a diverse array of tasty delights. There will also be stalls selling an assortment of goods from cosmetics, to candles, to handbags!

Hope Chapel - Open Door

Over the past couple of years, Hope Chapel has been reopened for major community and music events, then closed due to flood damage, closed due to serious problems with repair work and recently surrounded by scaffolding.

Dame Fortune's Wheel & The Three Estates is an exploration of the three 'classes' of men and women from long ago. Those who worked, those who prayed and those who fought.

Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves will be talking and answering questions on her new book, Alice in Westminster, the political life of Alice Bacon. The talk will be chaired by Holly Lynch, MP for Halifax.

Alice Bacon was one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable female politicians. Born and raised in the Yorkshire town of Normanton, she defied the odds to be elected Labour MP for Leeds North East in the 1945 General Election. Her political career spanned some of the most momentous decades in Britain's post-war history and she played an integral part in some of the most significant social, educational and political changes which the country has ever witnessed.

Contact Improvisation - From the Ground Up with Charlie Morrissey

This workshop explores some of the fundamental principles of Contact Improvisation and is an opportunity to dive deeply into the practice. It is applicable to, and will work well for, people with varying levels of experience of the form as well as for beginners.

We will work with how the body is always in relation to gravity and different ways of giving and taking weight with a partner.

Charlie’s classes and workshops are practical explorations of movement and attention. They attempt to develop and tune kinesthetic and perceptual awareness as a means of expanding our experience and ability to engage with what is available to us when we move, and how we might be available to it.

These classes are about developing our ability to listen in the body and applying that listening to the activity of moving.

The Lost Chord Ensemble

Local groups of self-taught botanists were a particular feature of South East Lancashire in the early decades of the 19th C, and there were certainly contacts in adjoining areas of West Yorkshire. The modest memoirs of two figures – whose graves are in Prestwich Parish Church - portray their development and achievements. John Horsefield, a handloom weaver, led a local society and the wider Manchester regional network while Richard Buxton, a shoemaker, compiled a Guide to the Flora around Manchester.

Now retired, Rob is a Prestwich resident with interests in  'history-from-below' and our surrounding environments.

Introducing Nick Hall and Des Horsfall - two fine singer songwriters at the top of their game, in a new alliance to perform their own original blend of Country, Folk and Rock.

Des and Nick are no strangers to the music fans of their native Yorkshire and far beyond, having toured many countries between them. They have over sixty years combined gigging and recording experience.

Nick is one half of award winning duo 'Plumhall', one half of Folk rockers 'The Hall Brothers', and former guitarist with Folk luminaries Magna Carta. Des has worked recently with Rock legend Pete Townshend, is Kuschty Rye front man and an occasional member of Slim Chance.

This could be the start of something beautiful not to be missed!

An Evening with Paralympic Cyclist Steve Bate MBE

An inspirational talk from Rio double gold medallist Steve Bate MBE. About 3 years ago, Steve was diagnosed with a condition which meant his vision would significantly deteriorate, and that he would very likely go blind. After the initial shock and trauma, instead of feeling sorry for himself, he decided he would attempt to be selected for the Paralympics on the back of a tandem, despite never having ridden competitively before.

If you've ever felt like your life was lacking meaning or missing a challenge, then Steve's story is well worth listening to.

We need to cut air pollution in Calderdale. In seven areas, called Air Quality Management Areas, traffic-caused air pollution exceeds legal limits for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Particulate Matter (PMn).

Biomass/Wood burning and incinerators are also becoming an air pollution issue.

We are trying to get an idea of people's views on air pollution in Calderdale - here is a 2 minute brief survey that it would be great if people would complete.

Nineteenth-century England lurched from one pollution crisis to another as public health officials, borough engineers and politicians failed to deal with the human waste associated with the ever burgeoning population! This evening's presentation will illuminate the arguments and debates faced by the sanitary engineers as they strove to establish sewerage systems to satisfy the ever progressive Victorian demands.

Tony is a production engineer who has spent all of his professional life within the manufacturing environment. However, the last six years have witnessed a personal change from that of the production manager to that of an historian: reading History at Oxford Brookes and achieving a BA and MA.

Citizen Science

As work progresses with our river surveys around the catchment and the pilot Natural Flood Management project scheme soon to be started in Hardcastle Crags, we are also developing another project around 'River Level Monitoring' along a number of rivers in Calderdale. These will provide us with real time data which will be provided by and for the community for the benefit of everyone in the area and for agencies such as Calderdale Council and The Environment Agency. It will also help us to monitor the levels in Hardcastle Crags to see how these new alleviation schemes are working to 'Slow The Flow'.

At our next meeting on the 2nd March we will be illustrating this new project and discussing the advantages of this 'Citizen Science' project. Please come and find out what we will be doing and the progress made so far.

Northlight's Art Studio's will be celebrating International Women's Day this March with a new exhibition in ArtSpace.

This work in progress exhibition, uses traditional commemorative ware to look at just a small selection of amazing women who left their mark throughout British history. Their contribution to society is immense but often over shadowed. These trailblazers and visionaries on display are just a thumbnail of the women who helped make a change to society.

Commemorative-ware has been used to document events from political satire to a holiday souvenir and was used as a social indicator of the times. This collection has been part of an on going project and has been selected by friends, family and through social media.

This work in progress exhibition has been made by Katch Skinner who is a tutor in ceramics and printmaking at Northlights Art Studios. She uses hand built ceramics and speciality design plaster moulds for slip casting to form plates and manipulated moulds. Each earthenware piece is unique, using hand painted underglazes, slips for mono printing, engobes, and lusters, she also produces silkscreened and digital decals, this means the work can take in excess of four kiln firings. There will be a Image to Clay workshop the following weekend at Northlight Art Studios.

Percy Copley - Free live folk, blues & jazz (with Ukulele)

Talented multi-instrumentalist Percy Copley will be coming to Hebden Bridge to do a free performance (taking a break from 20 years performing in the Dixieland Jazz & Country bands at Disneyland).

In the early evening he'll also be putting on a workshop that is free to residents of Hebden Bridge and £5 for everyone else.

Opening for Percy will be young local star, Isaac Hughes-Dennis. He's only 13 years old but has already written a fair few original, fun, catchy songs!

This is made possible through support from Calderdale Council, Grand Northern Ukulele Festival (where Percy will be performing in May).

As it's free, there are no tickets. If you need to pay for a space at the workshop you can pay on the day.

Live Cinema Broadcast: The Royal Ballet Presents The Sleeping Beauty

Enter an enchanted world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magical spells as The Royal Ballet presents The Sleeping Beauty screening Tuesday 28th at 7pm (doors 6pm) LIVE at Hebden Bridge Picture House.

The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful Princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage.

The masterful 19th-century choreography of Marius Petipa is combined with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Together they create an enchanting sequence of gems in the ballet repertory – from the iconic Rose Adage, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, and the lilting Garland Waltz to the Vision Pas de deux, as Florimund sees Aurora for the first time, and the celebratory divertissements and final pas de deux that bring the ballet to its glorious close. Throughout, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s masterful score takes ballet music to a height of passion, sophistication and intensity that arguably has never been surpassed.

Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragette census boycott across Calderdale.

On census night, 2 April 1911, suffragettes urged women, all still disenfranchised, to boycott the government’s census. Some did, hiding away in darkened rooms to evade the enumerator. Other women disagreed with this civil disobedience tactic, preferring to provide census information that could be used for the Liberal government’s health and welfare reforms. Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst came up and spoke to a packed meeting in Halifax, urging women to boycott. So how did Hebden Bridge and Halifax respond on census night?

The Lost Chord Ensemble

In June 2016 my husband, John, and I travelled from the Netherlands to Cleveland, Ohio, on board a bulk cargo ship carrying steel from Europe to the US car industry. This talk is about our journey down the English Channel, across the Atlantic Ocean, down the St Lawrence seaway and across Lakes Ontario and Erie to Cleveland.

Les Panards Dansants proudly present Duo Montanaro-Geoffroy playing French traditional folk music on 18th February in Hebden Bridge.

Baltazar and Laurent have played at our festival many times with their wonderful band Zef. They are returning to Yorkshire as a duo.

There will be an ensemble music workshop between 4-6pm (all instruments welcome) with a Bal/Concert at 8pm.

We might want the housing in Hebden Bridge to be high and dry, but that doesn't mean our young people have to be left that way too!

We'd like to speak to people looking to take their first steps on the housing ladder. We know there are fewer people aged between 18-40 in Hebden Bridge than in the surrounding areas. We think it's partly to do with a lack of good, affordable housing options for people leaving their family home.

Calder Valley Community Land Trust are planning to build new housing opposite the Fox and Goose. We want it to be predominantly aimed at the younger end of the market. Let us know what sort of housing you'd like to see there: Flats? Houses? Should there be some shared space or facilities?

Wally worked for most of his career in higher education. At the University of Bradford he was Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching in the School of Informatics between 2002 and 2005, and the Director of Combined Studies until his retirement in 2008. Both posts enabled him to combine his interests in the arts, humanities and technology.
He also worked with experimental company IOU Theatre where he chaired the Board of Directors between 1988 and 2007.

Nowadays he does a bit of cooking, walking, reading and gardening, tries to convince himself his brain still works by solving cryptic crosswords, and writes, sings, plays and records lots of music.

Ken Loach's Raining Stones

After the recent success of veteran film-maker Ken Loach's 'I, Daniel Blake', the Friends of the Picture House are pleased to screen the director's 1993 witty and eloquent story 'Raining Stones' on Saturday, February 11 at 4.30pm.

The film won the 1993 Cannes Jury Prize and stars Ricky Tomlinson and Bruce Jones. The Friends will serve free snacks before the film.

Mike Crawford - The Alan Petford Memorial Lecture

Blow the dust off the wills and inventories, unroll the parchment or paper and get a glimpse of the people, the families and their worries. Why was Henry Crabtree's pig lonely and were widows raking in the cash as money lenders? We can have some idea of how to answer these crucial issues with this peep into the lives of local people on the eve of the industrial revolution. 

Mike is a member of the group started by the much missed Alan Petford with the ambitious aim of transcribing the probate documents from the parish of Halifax at the end of the seventeenth century. Two volumes of these local documents have been published by the society, and Mike's study has revealed some fascinating details about the lives led by those who lived and died in this valley.

Mytholmroyd – The Development of a Pennine Village

Rodney Collinge

The talk will describe the development of Mytholmroyd from the earliest times, and will be illustrated by around 80 slides.

Rodney taught Chemistry at Calder High School for around 30 years, and before that was a pupil there. He thinks his old history teacher would doubtless be turning in his grave if he knew that his beloved Lit. and Sci. Historical Society was being 'defiled' by an illiterate scientist!

Everyone seems to think 2016 was a bad year...many people died, others brought voting into disrepute and 'post-truth' became a thing.

So, let's get 2017 off to a great start with a new year quiz raising funds for our Folk Roots Weekend in May ... the questions are put together by that nice Dave Boardman chap and, as ever, includes the always enjoyable music round - with the chance to take home some cool music.

There is little chance of this changing your life financially, but it may provide you with a cultural and emotional high.

Your £5 gets you fantastic food and an enormous sense of wellbeing - as well as Dave's slightly challenging and mildly enjoyable quiz.
